| Cosè il Centro studi GIACOMO PUCCINI |
| For many years, the
existence of institutions such as the Istituto
nazionale di studi verdiani and the Fondazione
Rossini in Pesaro, both reflecting the rich operatic
tradition of Italy, have made even more apparent the
absence in Lucca of an organization devoted to Giacomo
Puccini, the last in a distinguished tradition of great
Italian opera composers, whose creative life spanned the
late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The need
to establish in Puccinis native city a research
center dedicated to furthering the study and performance
of his works led to the creation of the Centro studi
Giacomo Puccini in 1996. In establishing an institution
in Lucca with an
international scholarly basis, the founders wished to
revive and expand the Fondazione Puccini created in 1974
by Rita DellAnna, widow of the composers son.
